What a find! Newspaper 50 years later with death information!

I have been searching for death information for Daniel Hyman, 1830-1888, and finally found a record in the Logansport Pharos-Tribune (Indiana), 17 Feb 1938, Page 4 Col. 6.  The item was listed under the title "50 Years Ago" it read: Daniel Hyman, an old and well known Cass county resident, was burled last Sunday at the cemetery north of Young America. The attendance was remarkably large, from 2,000 to 2,500 people being on the grounds, and 318 vehicles in the procession.   Another newspaper tidbit dated the week of Daniel's burial -Logansport Pharos (Indiana), Feb 23 1888,  Page 4, col. 3: Resolutions of Respect. HALL OF FLORA LODGE, } No. 520, I. O. O. F. LOGANSPORT, FEB. 17th, 1888. Whereas, It has seemed good in the wisdom of Almighty God,to remove from us our esteemed brother, Daniel Hyman, who died on the 10th day of February, 1888, therefore, be it Resolved, That in the death of Brother Daniel Hyman, our lodge has lost a valued and devote...

Still digging through treasures from my research trip

I am still entering and documenting my finds from my vacation.  I have finally finished entering and reviewing my finds from the public library in Logansport, Indiana.  The Logansport Cass County Public Library at 616 E Broadway has a plethora of genealogy books available. Their collection is located on the second floor of the building right behind the reference librarian.  The collection includes Polk Directories (boy did I find a lot of information in them), local Cass and Carroll County reference books, DAR and WPA marriage and birth records, and cemetery records for just about every cemetery in Cass counties. I am glad that I allowed myself a full day to use this facility.  I have to say I met just about the sweetest folks in Logansport.  Everyone I met from the hotel staff at the Holiday Inn Express, the library, and the courthouse were just great. My plan today is to complete the entering of information (clip files and book references) that I located at ...

North Judson News (Indiana) - Skibbe family

I am the proud owner of several editions of the North Judson News (Indiana) thanks to an E-Bay auction. North Judson is the largest town near Wayne Township in Starke County  where my great grandparents, Wilhelm and Julia Skibbe, settled near after becoming citizens of the United States.  Prior to moving to Wayne Township the Skibbe's resided in Chicago from  about 1887 to 1899.  Wilhelm lived in Laurenburg Germany now LeBork, Poland prior to coming to the United States. The family lore states Julia was living in Berlin prior to her marriage to Wilhelm. There is one newspaper edition from 1897, one from 1898, six from 1908 and one from 1921.  Researching archival solutions for the papers I learned just how highly acidic newspapers are.  The acidity in the paper is what turns the paper darker and brittle.   Newspaper clippings can be de-acidified with the use of Bookkeeper Deacidification Spray.  The spray neutralizes the paper to buffer it ...

Mystery Monday - Hannah Ditch, Starke and Pulaski Counties

Image
Among my grandfather's papers my mother had kept is the tax receipt below.  The clues in the document (or what remains of the document) are the name of what was taxed - apparently Hannah Ditch Cause No. 8024 Starke Circuit Court, the location - either Starke or Pulaski Counties in Indiana, and a partial description SW SW - SW SE of Section 34-32-3 and the date, 28 June 1922.  A World War I Registration Card does show William A. Skibbe living in Denham, Pulaski County in the year 1917.  Census records in 1920 indicate he was living in Wayne, Starke, Indiana.  In 1924 his address was listed as Chicago, Cook, Illinois on one of his children's birth certificates.  Can anyone provide any clues to this receipt?

Madness Monday: Where is Sharon Cemetery in Indiana?

Snooping around old newspapers for clues to John N. Poundstone brought to light a death announcement in the Logansport Journal.  The article is as follows:   John N. Poundstone an old and prominent citizen of Deer Creek township, died at his home at Young America at 5 a.m. yesterday at the age of 83 years.  The deceased had been a resident of Deer Creek township for forty-three years.  He leaves four sons and two daughters.  The funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Presbyterian Church at Wheeling, Ind.  Interment in Sharon cemetery.   John N. Poundstone obituary, Logansport Journal , Logansport, Indiana, 8 July 1900, page 5, column 3. John's death certificate lists his burial in Sherin Cemetery, location and date not included. Wheeling, Indiana is located in Carroll County; Deer Creek is located in Cass County - they are near one another but I cannot find the location of a Sharon Cemetery....

Poundstone Death Certificates

I guess I needed to go out of town for the death certificates I ordered to be delivered.  They were a pleasant  surprise after a long weekend of exploring in Arizona and New Mexico.  The good news is that I now have evidence that the five Poundstone's that I thought were relatives from Cass County Indiana are indeed my relatives. I also was surprised that the clerk at the Cass County Health Department went that extra mile and included the birth locations of the parents on all five of the decedents death certificate. I should note that I ordered the genealogical certificates versus the certified original.  George Washington Poundstone who is  my 2nd Great Uncle was killed by lightning.  The death certificate indicates that an inquest was held.  I guess I will add that to my list of items to locate.  I did locate a newspaper blurb from the Indianapolis Star:   In Cass County, George Poundstone, a farmer of Young America, was ...
