#NGS2017Gen Raleigh NGS Excitement

The Pre-NGS Conference fun begins in the morning!  I and fellow blogger J Paul Hawthorne, along with others,  will be busy learning at the Putting Skills To Work by the BCG Education Fund.  The event features Nancy A. Peters, CG, "Make Your Case: Correlating Evidence to Solve Genealogical Problems" followed by Sara Ann Scribner, CG teaching "Making Your Case: Constructing and Writing Proof Arguments". I am looking forward to learning some new skills and meeting new people.  While we are learning other attendees will be visiting plantations, researching at the archives, or enjoying some of the museums and historic sites Raleigh has to offer.  I hope everyone at the conference has a chance to explore outside the conference center and their hotels.   Remember to check at your hotel for a list of nearby restaurants and things to do.  I can highly recommend The Pit Authentic Barbecue at 328 W. Davie, check out the offerings here:   Men...

Preparing for Certification.............Suggestions for advancement

The Boston University certificate of Genealogical Research program has been completed.  At the end of our course the instructors made some suggestions for furthering our education.  Friends and other genealogy acquaintances have also made suggestions.  I decided to put all the suggestions together to form one master lists.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions.  Here is what I came up with:  SUGGESTED FOR ADVANCEMENT WEBSITE/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NGS Home Study Course http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/cs/homestudy_course_cd Boston University Certificate Genealogical Research http://professional.bu.edu/programs/genealogy/ University of Toronto, National Institute Gen. FGS: Connect.Explore.Refresh - Planning for the experience FGS 2015

Image
I have been coming up with a plan to make FGS and RootsTech conference the best they can possibly be.  It is a three part plan that will hopefully come together and provide the experience of a lifetime. I am also keeping in mind sometimes it is OK to fly by the seat of your pants. I missed out on  Geneablogger time at the SCGS Jamboree by trying to fit in every possible class.  What you learn socially is just as important as what you learn in the sessions.  Part one of my plan:  Preparing for a visit to the Family History Library.  I have been reviewing my database looking for research holes that could potentially be solved by locating information at the FHL.  I have been looking through the catalog for books and microfilm and organizing that information for the most efficient use of my library time.  I like to organize my research for each floor and then by area.  I have decided to add additional days to my visit for the ...

NGS Las Vegas, my reward!

Image
Watch out Vegas, here I come!  The National Genealogy Conference is being held in Las Vegas this year and I can't wait to catch up with friends, learn some new skills, and of course work for my pal Lisa Louise Cooke.  Please stop by the Genealogy Gems booth to visit with us during the conference.  The conference is my reward for making it through my daughter's wedding. Juliana and Alex Chambers - 27 April 2013, Stillwell  House, Tucson, AZ  I am looking forward to road tripping to the conference with my good friend Leslie Carney. Did you know that the NGS conference has an app?  For the latest conference information and schedule visit  NGS App  follow the directions and download to your phone.

Ancestry Digital Scanning

Image
Ancestry offered free document and picture scanning at the NGS conference and I took full advantage of their help.  I brought with me from Tucson some original documents and photos from the early 1900's.  I guess I could have scanned them myself but the high speed, high tech scanners Ancestry had available did a much better job (and faster too) than I could have accomplished. The Ancestry scanning team took my envelope of precious information, scanned them and provided me with THREE flash drives with my images.  I have uploaded two of the flash drives and sorted the images into the appropriate  files on Legacy and on my computer.  One image was of the Poundstone family tree drawn by George Poundstone in 1933.  George's work was very intricate and on a very odd sized paper.  Now I have a wonderful image that I can send to family and share with others researching the Poundstone line without finding a printer that can photocopy the tree. Thank you Anc...
