Here is a copy of my third great grandfather's marriage record.  The date of the source entry is January 24th 1838 with further information stating a marriage of January 25th 1838.  I am going to stick with the January 25th date because that is the date from his obituary and bible record.  How can the entry be dated the day before? Now on the citation should I note the entry date of 24 January 1838 and the  marriage date of 25 January 1838? FamilySearch , Entry for John N. My Granduncle and Grandaunt - Catherine (Cashom) and Earl Poundstone.  Earl's real name is Vernon but he went by his middle name of Earl.  Both are buried in the Bement Cemetery, Bement, Piatt County, Illinois.  Earl was one of ten children born to Ora Pearl Poundstone and Stella Ann Adams Poundstone.

Elizabeth Anna Poundstone who married Lewis Hyman is probably the first Poundstone I have come across suffering from a mental illness.  I have no information as to whether or not she had been admitted to the Long Cliff Hospital.  I do know that she had ten children between the years of approximately 1862 to 1885, that alone would make me doubt my sanity.  Religious Excitement Dethroned the Mind of Mrs. Lewis Hyman Of Deer Creek Township, and She Attempted Suicide by Drowning      Mrs. Hyman, wife of Lewis Hyman, a well-known farmer residing in Deer Creek township, two miles north of Young America, attempted suicided Sunday night by drowning in Deer Creek.      The unfortunate woman is 56 years of age, the mother of several children, and her attempt at self-destruction was inspired by religious insanity.      She had been a regular attendant at a religious revival in progress at the United brethren church...

Richard Poundstone and Susannah Zeck Marriage Record I located this record at the Cass County Clerk's office in Cass County, Logansport, Indiana.  The record was in Marriage Record Book #3 which covers the records between January 1847 and September 1864.  The license was issued the same day that they were married, 7 February 1861.  They were married by John R. Flyn, a Justice of the Peace.

I found an old invitation to the Poundstone Reunion at the Carroll County Indiana Historical Society.  I located it in the Hyman family file. Poundstone Reunion again this year. Come, every cousin, and be of good cheer, The first Sunday in August, the fourth, if you please. The year on-nine-two-nine, come, be at your ease. So I should be working on the handout for the genealogy class I am teaching on Tuesday, but I was distracted by the website for requesting SSA-711 Internet Requests for deceased Individuals Social Security Application. You can order onilne at  https://secure.ssa.gov/apps9/eFOIA-FEWeb/internet/main.jsp, it took less than fifteen minutes to order four records.  I ordered records for Frank Urman, Ora Poundstone, Otis Clark, and William Skibbe.  Now I wonder just how long it takes for them to process the requests made on line. Technically I was just looking for websites to share with my class when I started doing requests.  I guess  better stay off the internet and immerse my self in my word processing program and just get it done so I can play so more.  I am already thinking of other relatives that I could order requests for.  Save me from myself...

I had a surprise when researching on Findagrave.com, a death certificate that I posted on my blog and on Ancestry was posted to the grave of my Great Grandfather.  I don't mind the image being there, I do mind that some guy by the name of Max  Turpin that did not credit the source to anything but himself.  The image, unaltered from my scan of the original, including the state of Illinois processing date is shown on Findagrave. Now I have posted the picture on my blog (this one) and on Ancestry.com both places that clearly show my name.  I would have even uploaded the picture to Findagrave, that is not the issue.  The issue is taking someone's image and saying that it is yours!  When people are so blatant about taking credit for someone thing that they did not procure - what exactly does that say about their own research.  Other postings by Mr. Turpin regarding my family include census records and marriage records that are not cited.  Perhaps he fo...

I am trying to plan a quick trip to Cass County Indiana while visiting Illinois for our family reunion.  Problem is I don't know when it is!  I also need to hook up with some cousins and do a little courthouse stomping in Illinois.  All of that and try to keep expenses down!  Let's hope the family firms some plans up soon - I also hear that one of my cousins children is getting married soon and another cousin's child is getting married in June.  Kinda feel out of the loop here in Arizona (or maybe I just annoy my cousins too much for an invite to the weddings!)  I know I will need at least a day in Cass County to do some Poundstone research.  I would like to have a few days to visit Cousin Zena and her folks and do some research and then there is the Clark/Damery family - I certainly need a few days to catch up with them and  do a little digging around.  Here is what I wish to accomplish for my Poundstone line- My Cass County Indiana list i...

I have to say 2010 was a wonderful year.  I made some great friends, advanced my research, and upped my blog posts.  I also scanned every document I have for my family history and have sorted them in the appropriate locations. I also attended some wonderful conferences and learned some new tricks.  My business has been doing well and a long past murder in my family has been solved and the guilty party put in jail.  All and all a fabulous year. 2011 will be my year of refining my research goals, following my research plan and hopefully learning and growing even more.  This year I am going to search for my Poundstone relatives with a passion.  I plan on doing some research in Illinois and Indiana trying to track down some missing clues.  I will also see what information I can glean from my Miottel and Skibbe relatives.   I also plan on diligently searching my husbands side of the family.  Watch out Yurmanovich, Drezdon and Milolajckak familie...

Daniel Zeck and his wife Caroline nee Poundstone.  Young America Cemetery in Young America, Cass, Indiana.  Daniel and Caroline were married 7 Mar 1867 in Cass County, Indiana.  They had four children:  Inus, Nora, Delbert and Everett.  Caroline is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt, she is the sister to my 2nd Great Grandfather Richard Poundstone. 

Snooping around old newspapers for clues to John N. Poundstone brought to light a death announcement in the Logansport Journal.  The article is as follows:   John N. Poundstone an old and prominent citizen of Deer Creek township, died at his home at Young America at 5 a.m. yesterday at the age of 83 years.  The deceased had been a resident of Deer Creek township for forty-three years.  He leaves four sons and two daughters.  The funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Presbyterian Church at Wheeling, Ind.  Interment in Sharon cemetery.   John N. Poundstone obituary, Logansport Journal , Logansport, Indiana, 8 July 1900, page 5, column 3. John's death certificate lists his burial in Sherin Cemetery, location and date not included. Wheeling, Indiana is located in Carroll County; Deer Creek is located in Cass County - they are near one another but I cannot find the location of a Sharon Cemetery....

A while back I sent a letter of inquiry to the Cass County Circuit Court in Logansport, Indiana to see if they had a record of my 3rd Great Grandfather's (John N. Poundstone 1817-1900) will and probate.  I am happy to report that I was sent a copy of the will filed with the court. I am sorry to report that the court only copied the will and did not copy any additional information from the probate process. He listed his children by name (including the married names of his daughters), his wife, his belongings and land.  I have found in the past that not all my relatives have been so helpful.  Young America, Cass Co. Henry Poundstone, my second Great-Granduncle, born 3 May 1840 in Bowling Green, Licking County, Ohio.  He died 15 Nov 1915 Young America, Cass County, Indiana.  Henry is buried in the Center United Brethren Church Cemetery in Young America, Cass, Indiana.

I guess I needed to go out of town for the death certificates I ordered to be delivered.  They were a pleasant  surprise after a long weekend of exploring in Arizona and New Mexico.  The good news is that I now have evidence that the five Poundstone's that I thought were relatives from Cass County Indiana are indeed my relatives. I also was surprised that the clerk at the Cass County Health Department went that extra mile and included the birth locations of the parents on all five of the decedents death certificate. I should note that I ordered the genealogical certificates versus the certified original.  George Washington Poundstone who is  my 2nd Great Uncle was killed by lightning.  The death certificate indicates that an inquest was held.  I guess I will add that to my list of items to locate.  I did locate a newspaper blurb from the Indianapolis Star:   In Cass County, George Poundstone, a farmer of Young America, was ...

I am still deep into reading the Probate file of Morris Durbin who died in 1880 in Fayette County, Illinois.  The file is somewhat large and I am entering each document into my database, transcribing it, scanning it reviewing it for clues to the family.  I sent away for the probate file of John Nicholas Poundstone from Cass County Indiana today.  He died in 1900.  I also managed to fill out five requests for death records on Poundstone's in Cass County Indiana and mailed them off.   I had the opportunity to share information with another Poundstone researcher.  I questioned her citations, or lack there of, and she said "I am more interested in the story aspect of genealogy than the documentation."  ARGH!!! That statement frustrates me so much.  I don't know how you can have a story without the facts.  Does genealogy have a story aspect without a basis of facts or information obtained from research?  It reminds me of a patron at t...
