52 Ancestors: Ancestor #3 Clara E Miottel
52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks a blog prompt by Amy Johnson Crow http://www.nostorytoosmall.com/posts/challenge-52-ancestors-in-52-weeks/
Clara E. Miotell was my grandmother. I never had a chance to meet her, she died shortly before my mother's 23rd birthday. She was born 25 Jul 1894 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. She was the fourth of six children born to Theodor and Johanna (nee Schuck) Miottel. Her birth was preceded by a baby boy born 20 Mar 1889 that died 21 Mar 1889; Johanne M. Miottel born 3 May 1890 who died later that day; and a sister Hedwig that was born 6 Mar 1893 and died 6 Apr 1897. Siblings George and Lydia were born were born 24 Apr 1897 and 15 Dec 1899 respectively. Clara's mother and sister Lydia both passed away in August of 1900, just ten days apart from the flu and TB.
Clara's father remarried on 25 May 1901 to Emilie Blank, nee Panzer. Emilie's husband Adolph Blank had passed away in March of 1900. She and Adolph had four children: Margarette, Helen, Arthur and Adolph Jr. A new household was formed and by 1910 the census shows the family living in Chicago, Ward 12 with the following living in the household:
Theodor Miottell 49
Emilie C Miottel 43
Clara E Miottel 15
George Miottel 12
Adolph Blank 21
Margarerette A Blank 16
Arthur E Blank 13
Helen C Blank 11
John W Miottel (Theodor's brother) 53
I imagine the household was busting at the seems!
The 1920 Census finds her living with her father Theodor, step-mother Emilie and step-sister Helen. Clara's occupation is listed as a shoemaker.
Clara married William Skibbe on 14 Sep 1921. They adopted their niece Vayola Gollnick after the death of Williams sister 's and brother-in-law in 1921. A son William Jr. was born 28 Dec 1923. My mother was born in 1934.
Clara died on 9 Nov 1957 at the age of 63. She died at Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago of cancer of the colon.
